Information about Gum Grafts
Gum grafts are a type of dental surgery performed to correct the effects of gum recession. It is a quick and relatively simple surgery in which a periodontist removes healthy gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and uses it to build the gum back up where it has receded.
Gum grafts help when gum recession occurs when gum tissue wears away, exposing more of the tooth at the root. This may cause increased sensitivity, especially when eating or drinking hot or cold foods. Because gum recession tends to happen slowly, many people do not realize it is happening to them. If left untreated, gum recession could eventually lead to tooth loss.
Some people choose to have gum grafts for cosmetic reasons, such as to have a better smile; while for others, gum grafts are necessary to protect the exposed tooth from damage and repair any damage already done.
Patients can go home right away after the procedure. Dr. Hegde will discuss all the aftercare instructions to ensure the graft heals successfully.
After the gum grafts procedure, teeth may feel more sensitive than usual, particularly to hot and cold foods, and people may benefit from desensitizing toothpaste or mouthwash. Most people can return to work the following day.
Are there any complications?
Complications after a gum graft are minimal and uncommon.
It is, however, possible that people may experience the following:
bleeding gums
swollen gums
teeth feeling looser (though this should only be temporary)
sensitive teeth
spaces appearing between the teeth
infection
Some people do not like how their smile looks after gum grafts. Dr.Hegde can reshape the gums in these situations to help change their appearance.
