The history of Gum Grafts
Gum grafting, also known as gingival grafting, has evolved significantly over the past several decades. Early approaches to treating gum recession were relatively rudimentary, but the modern era began in the mid-20th century when periodontists started developing more refined surgical techniques. Initially, free gingival grafts were introduced to cover exposed roots and prevent further recession, primarily to reduce sensitivity and improve aesthetics.
Over time, these techniques were further refined by introducing subepithelial connective tissue grafts and pedicle grafts, which offered better integration and more natural-looking results. Advances in microsurgery, incorporating allografts and xenografts, and using growth factors have continued to improve healing outcomes and patient comfort. Today, gum grafting is a well-established procedure in periodontics and cosmetic dentistry, reflecting decades of innovation aimed at restoring both function and beauty to the smile.
